Swift’s organisation and governance

Headquartered in Belgium, Swift’s international governance and oversight reinforces the neutral, global character of its cooperative structure. Swift shareholders elect a Board composed of 25 Directors which governs the Company and oversees management.

Swift’s governance is designed to reflect usage of Swift messaging services, ensure our global relevance, support our international reach and uphold Swift’s strict neutrality.

Jaap Kamp (1945-2023): Chair of the Board, 2000-2006

Former Chair of the Board, Jaap Kamp, has passed away in July 2023. The sincere condolences of the Swift Board, Swift, management and staff and the wider community go to Mr Kamp’s family.

Mr Kamp was Chair of the Board for six years from 2000 until 2006, having initially joined as a Swift Board member in 1994 to represent the Netherlands financial community. During his tenure as Chair, he played a strong and valuable role in Swift’s development, overseeing the implementation of the SwiftNet messaging infrastructure that laid the foundation of the core services we offer in payments, securities, treasury and trade. He was a highly appreciated leader of the Board who remained committed to the success of Swift and its community even after his retirement. He stayed in touch and was a supportive figure for many in the organisation over the years. He is held in fond memory and will be missed.
